The Mars valley seems to have little
agricultural value. The river banks are covered with thicket, the hedges have
spread, and grassland gradually decreased. The forest on the left bank once
occupying the prominent slopes can be seen increasing again on the floodplains
previously devoted to pastures. The farms however, remain at a respectable
level. All around the valley there is evidence of restoration. Perhaps the 60
mills that the Mars formerly turned, now ruined, could also be restored. The
valley has many springs, bridges, ancient homes, and strong houses as that of 14th
Century Chanterelle with its medieval road which was reopened in the 17th
Century. There are also fine chateaux of the mountain dwellers such as those of
La Boire and Longeverne.
